Yeah, so a few people came up with the idea of us Gentlepersons hosting a costume contest.
To keep things simple, for now I'd just say everybody who's interested in helping out, report in. We can take it from there, thinking about details (time, date, place) and basic concept (personally, I'd like to consider going with something more original, but we can talk about that).
So yeah. REPLY!

As I mentioned in the SG chat, I'll definitely make sure I'm available to help with this. If we do a themed one, we'll want to announce it on the CO boards a few days in advance or so to give people time to come up with concepts.
As far as how we score it, I figure the simplest way would be to have a group of us as judges and then have us each pick which costume we think is 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place or so. Each place would be worth a different amount of points. From there we could just have the highest point total winning, or depending on how many entries we have could eliminate everyone below a certain point threshold and have another round of voting on finalists.

Personally, I'd like to try something completely different, since themed contests are regularly held in the forums. Originally my idea was to hold a speed contest. As in, we announce the time and date, round up the contestants, and THEN tell them what theme to follow with their costume. Then they have 20 minutes to create an outfit and round up again, so we can choose the winner. Another idea would be to make them change their original costumes to fit into a certain theme. As in, the original hero still shines through, but fits the given theme now.
Of course, none of this is as simple to pull off as just doing a usual costume contest, so we might as well do that. Or we can add even more nonsense to the thing, I'm really open for any ideas here, just spit it out guys.
Scoring.. we should probably come back at that when we know more of the details.

Hmm, the speed contest isn't a bad idea, and I actually really like the original costume fit into a certain theme idea. It'd be a simple matter of having the person show their normal outfit and then switch into the modified theme version when we do the judging of a person.

Hey!
sorry, i kinda fell asleep on sat.....
well yea i think the speed idea is great and makes our contest a bit different...we can also include emotes as part of the criteria, so we can get a feel of what the costume's theme should be like (would it be a serious guy that taunts toons, or a hyperactive toon that dances alot). i dunno just my thought...

I gotta say that the the original costume v. the theme costume one would be a lot of fun. We could make them do a steampunk/1602 variant or a hightech/mechanized variant. Or we could get an even more peculiar theme, depending on what people were into like a golden age variant or an anime variant.

I've always wished a costume contest would be judged on multiple costumes going together, so I support that idea.
Rather than have it be a speed contest though, just announce it ahead of time, so people can really fine-tune their costume variant. When you get the plans down solid, let me know and I'll add it to our announcements section.

Of course they can't fine-tune it, that's why I want a speed contest. Only the skilled survive! Tough, I guess we can split these ideas up and save some of them for other events. I don't how you guys feel about that. As for the first theme, I would suggest "Fallen". Heroes have to create a dark, sinister mirror image of themselves, a rogue-version if you like. Of course, Heroes who are dark by nature can go with a light mirror image. About the emotes, this brings me to a different idea. When judging customes per se, I would, honestly, not include emotes and rather judge the costumes themselves. However, we can also do a contest unter the theme of a talent show, where you can get a group of people together (or come by yourself) and then dance, sing, rhyme, flip around, flex, ect. Craziest ideas win. This would of course include emotes.

I like the idea of having each contestant come out one at a time and "present" themselves kinda. Let them strut like beauty contestants! You'd want to find a good stage though, that you can easily keep clear so everyone can see. My aversion to a timed-type event is mostly that the first time you do something like this, you find out just how hard it is to organize things within a timeframe. If you guys are interested enough and put together one of these every week or so, when you get experienced at it, then you may want to try it. But the first time you do it, so many unexpected things come up... My first Carmel event for example I very very quickly realized I needed a 2nd person to be doing ticket-taking rather than doing it myself

The one problem with the beauty contest style idea is that if we did a variant costume contest, that could become rather cumbersome. I have to admit, I really like the idea of a "fallen" variant. It's simple, straight-forward, and could get a lot of people interested.

I was eavesdropping on a zone-chat conversation this evening regarding costume contests and one person made a good comment which i think is a good idea.
He/she/it said that the winners should be judged on not only their costume but also their back-story and how well the costume(s) fitted into the whole concept they had created.
Just my two-penneth.

Y'know, that's something I've always wanted to see too. Tough there was Maglama's character concept contest just recently, which did exactly that. Also, I think it's kinda hard to judge backstories ingame. You have to take your team to read them and they tend to be quite long. Know what I mean?

I actually think the backstories in Info are too short. There isn't much room really and there's about 2 paragraphs worth. Compared to the costume creator, the room you have to wiggle in is pale in comparison.

Alright, so let's settle for something and then think of a time and date. What's it gonna be: *) Speed contest *) Adapt-A-Costume *) "Talent Show" Also, anything I forgot, anybody else like to add anything? Now's the time

I like Adapt-A-Costume for this personally. So my vote's for that one! Also, if you need cash to run it, try to withdraw some from the SG vault, a few people have been able to in small (1-5g) increments. I still can't of course

Alright, I'd say let's just start with Adapt-A-Costume then.
So far we had the following suggestions for themes:
*) Steampunk / 1602 *) Mechanized / Hightech *) Fallen (bad/good mirror image)
Anyone else want to suggest a theme? Or did I overlook something?

Because it's the first, I'd probably recommend going with a "fallen" version. It's the easiest to both understand and do.
Also, because it's something to prepare for, you may want to consider how you're going to do it in-game. When it's just "show up and be judged" you can advertise in zone and people can show up. Not everyone may get in the zone, but those who are can show up and compete. However, if people are going to design a costume for a specific theme, then not be able to get into the instance because it's full, it's going to be disappointing. Best bet is probably just choose the lowest population instance the day of or something. I'm not sure what the caps are on the trainer instances in MC, but you could try that too.

To wrap this up, seeing how not a lot of replies are coming in, I'd say we just go with the only vote and take "Fallen"? Any objections?

Alright, first Gentlepersons-costume-contest: Adapt-A-Costume, Fallen theme. Now all we need is a time, a date and a list of helpers. I'd suggest doing it about a week after announcement, preferably on a sunday. As for the time, I want to give as many people as possible a chance to participate, so I'd suggest 2 AM PST (10 AM GMT, 8 PM AEST). That way, the saturday-latenighters from the US can join, while everybody from the UK to Australia is already awake again. That's fair, at least compaired to the usual, more US-centered times that are more or less impossible for everybody else. The only other option I'd be able to come up with was noon PST, which is at least Euro-friendly, meaning I can tag along. Sucks for Aussies though, since that's around 6 AM there, so I have to say I'm not really a 100% on this. Tell me what you think about that. As for helpers, I've already got the following on my list: ronnocthered randompersona rosalina A few others have posted on this thread, but I wasn't really sure if they planned on participating in the actual event. Just tell me if you do.

2 AM PST wouldn't exactly work for me. I'm on the East Coast of the US so that would be 5 AM here.

Yeah, you're gonna have to go a bit earlier for most of the US players. That's why I chose 2 PM on a Saturday for my latest event, only time that hit the 3 main areas satisfactorily. You're also going to want to discuss how it's going to run. Are you charging an admission fee? What rewards are there going to be? (If you want some resources or a few AFs, I can let you use some that're in the SG vault, but the rare ones I'm keeping for my event ) But, most importantly, how're you going to have them show their 2 costumes? Just line up and all the judges go down the line while they swap costumes? Or have each one step up and change costume?

For now I'd like to know how many people are actually going to be there helping me with the organization. 2 PM PST is 8 AM in Australia. I honestly don't think people want to get up at 7.30 AM on a sunday just so they can attend a costume contest. However, if it's 5 AM for ronnocthered, that is an issue too. How about 3 PM PST on a saturday? That's 11 PM in the UK, midnight in most of Europe and 9 AM in Australia. I'm still not very content with that, but it's kind of reasonable. Maybe 4 PM would be even better.

4 PM probably would work fairly well, enough euros can still hang around for midnight, and it's late enough that aussies might be ok with it.
Also, if you get it ready by tomorrow, I can announce it in the CarmelSantiago event.

Well.. replies are coming in very slowly. I don't think there'll be a set date by tommorrow. But, if you want, you can tell people to stay on the lookout for the soon to come announcement of the Gentleperson's newest event, to be found in a CO-forum near you.
